Last week, I hung out with Emma Roberts, who was in town promoting the "Movies that Pop" version of her recent flick, Nancy Drew, which features behind-the-scenes trivia accompanying the film when streamed on iTunes or Video on Demand. (Did you know that Emma made 27 costume changes during her role as the teenage detective?)
When we met, Emma was dressed casually in skinny jeans, black boots, layered thermal tops and her hair was dyed jet black, but she was eager to talk about her much lighter, spring wardrobe. Her next movie, Wild Child, where she plays a spoiled fashionista, was shot on location last summer in England, so shopping overseas was an obvious starting point for the interview.
SF: So how was the shopping in London?
ER: Amazing! I really loved Selfridges, which was like Barneys times 20. My friend, [actress] Juno Temple, is British so she took me to all the flea markets and vintage shops. I really liked Portobello Road in Notting Hill. And I was shooting in London when Kate Moss' line came out at Topshop so I bought a lot of stuff from there. I had to ship three boxes back to L.A.!
SF: Because of your hectic work schedule and the looming paparazzi, do you plan your outfits ahead of time?
ER: Well, I have a stylist for events, The Maude Girls. They're awesome. But otherwise, I'll just grab a T-shirt, jeans, and boots.
SF: Who or what inspires your style?
ER: My girlfriends all have really cute clothes so we trade. And I see what people are wearing in magazines and online. I like Kate Moss' style and Angelina Jolie's. Scarlett Johansson always looks good, too.
SF: What are your favorite fashion magazines?
ER: Teen Vogue--and I'm not just saying that!--Vogue and Harper's Bazaar.
SF: Who are your favorite designers?
ER: Luella, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Juicy Couture, and Miu Miu.
SF: You designed a leather bag for Dooney and Burke's 2006 spring collection. What was that like?
ER: That was really fun. I met with a woman from Dooney and Burke and we went over the kinds of styles and shapes and colors that I like in a bag. It was cool.
SF: Are there any items that you've been eyeing for spring?
ER: I recently bought two pairs of Tory Burch sandals, one wedged pair, one flat. I love the dresses Kirsten Dunst wears in the new Miu Miu ad campaign. And Chanel has some really cute bathing suits for summer.
SF: What are you looking forward to this summer?
ER: L.A. is pretty warm year-round, but I guess we spend more time outside in the summer. I'm looking forward to spending time with my friends, going to the beach and going to pool parties. All my girlfriends got their drivers' licenses this year, but I didn't. So they'll have to take me everywhere!
